Chapter 7

Jessica tapped her foot on the thickly carpeted floor of the library while she waited for Devon to arrive. If he didn't get here soon, she wouldn't have much time to work her charms on him before she had to get outside and execute the next phase of her Todd and Courtney plot. Jessica cast a glance at the clock and sighed. All of this scheming was exciting, but it was beginning to get stressful.

"Hey, Jess."

Jessica felt a pleasant tingle rush down her spine at the sound of Devon's voice behind her.

"How did you sneak up on me?" she asked in a low tone. Her eyes had been trained on the door for the last five minutes at least.

"I got here a while ago, but I was checking out some books in the science section," he said as he slid into the chair next to hers. "Sorry I'm late."

"That's OK," Jessica said with a smile. Inside she was puzzled. Devon was flipping through boring science texts when he could've been here with her? He must really be into this whole chemistry thing.

"So let's get to work," Devon said, pulling his chemistry book from his leather saddlebag. Jessica almost shivered with delight. He was so cool, he didn't even carry a backpack. "What chapter are you on?" Devon asked.

Jessica froze. Chapter? She had no idea what chapter her class had been studying. Her mind whirled back to her chem period earlier that day. "We're, uh, working on heat energy releases," she improvised, hoping she'd strung the words together correctly.

"OK," Devon said, running his finger along the table of contents. "That's chapter eight." He started to flip the pages.

"Right. Chapter eight," Jessica said, nodding enthusiastically. He was all business, wasn't he? Well, they'd just see about that. "Devon," Jessica began in a whisper. "Thank you so much for helping me with this." She leaned over and touched his forearm flirtatiously.

Devon stared at her hand for a moment, then moved his arm away. "It's no problem, Jessica," he said. Then he chuckled. "Actually I wasn't surprised to find out that chemistry wasn't your thing."

"What do you mean?" Jessica asked, her brow knitting.

"You. I mean, you're obviously not the most . . . scientific person on the planet," Devon said offhandedly, looking at her out of the corner of his eye.

Jessica felt her blood start to boil. Was Devon insulting her intelligence—right to her face?

"Not like Elizabeth, right?" she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Right," Devon said with a nod, his eyes skimming the first page of chapter eight. Jessica noticed he was studying a colorful picture of an erupting volcano. It completely reflected her own emotions.

"Devon Whitelaw, you are so clueless!" she shouted, standing up and grabbing her bag.

"Shhh!" the librarian cautioned from the other side of the room.

"Jess. I didn't mean—" Devon's eyes were wide with shock.

"Save it. I know exactly what you meant," Jessica fumed, ignoring the harsh looks of the library staff. "For your information, your precious Elizabeth isn't as perfect as you think she is.
